Sibelius, Symphony No.6
Britten, Piano Concerto
Jac Van Steen, Conductor
Barry Douglas, Piano
“The Sixth Symphony always reminds me of the scent of the first snow,” said Sibelius in 1943. He also described the work as ‘pure spring water’ and as you let its shimmering, mysterious landscape envelop you, you understand what he meant.
There are moments of drama and moments of mystery as the symphony unfolds – simply let this wonderful sound world whisk you off to a dreamlike place of escape! Always a friend of the Ulster Orchestra, Barry Douglas makes a welcome return this Season, on this occasion to perform a favourite work of his and one which he has long championed, Britten’s Piano Concerto. Where Sibelius’s Sixth Symphony is a mesmerising enigma, Britten’s Piano Concerto is a vibrant display of spectacular showmanship, full of colour and fun.
